A brief period of the French Revolution, 1793 -1794, where revolutionary fervour, led by Robespierre and the so-called Committee for Public Safety, caused, apart from a series of massacres, over 16,000 official death sentences being handed out for alleged treason or clerical or aristocratic associations.
